Dramatic Wedding sunset pictureCourtney and Eric met at UNC’s dental school and got married at The Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.  Their wedding was wonderfully detailed with sentimental decor and a vibrant color scheme of turquoise and pink.  In Courtney’s words,  “I choose a light turquoise for bridesmaids’ gowns because turquoise is my favorite color;  however, I think blue can be an awkward color to match flowers to so to help my color scheme blend better I had my maid and matron of honor wear blush-colored dresses.”  The flowers were white hydrangeas, pale pink peonies and pink roses which tied the color scheme in perfectly.

What was your favorite part of the wedding day?
Seeing all of the hard work and months of planning transition into a beautiful, unforgettable day that I shared with my husband.
What surprised you about your wedding day?
Most everything went according to our plans. I was also delighted that it was sunny during our ceremony because the sky was very dark and ominous on my limo ride to the ceremony.
What advice would you give another bride/groom planning a wedding?
Enjoy your wedding day as couple because it will be over before you know it. My husband and I agreed not to get upset if things didn’t go according to our plans.
Did you do an engagement session or a bridal portrait session? Would you recommend it to another bride/groom?
I did both and I would recommend both. My husband and I really enjoy reliving so many wonderful memories through all of our photos.
What do you wish you had done differently on your wedding day?
Honestly, I wouldn’t change anything. We did a lot of planning and it paid off well.
Name one of your favorite images from your wedding day and tell why it is your favorite.
My favorite picture is a picture of my husband and me standing in front of the wooden cross that my uncle made for our ceremony. The flower spray on the cross with the dunes in the background was a beautiful representation of our wedding decor, and I love how happy we both look in that picture.

What was your favorite part of the wedding day?
Seeing my father’s and my fiance’s reaction to seeing me in my dress for the first time that day.  Neither had seen me in the dress or knew what the dress looked like and since they are the two most important men in my life, this was important to me.  It was as emotional for me as I think it was for them.
What surprised you about your wedding day?
I don’t like being the center of attention, and I knew all eyes would be on me for the ceremony.  That, in and of itself, terrified me!  But, when the time finally came, I was so focused on me and my fiance and being in that moment together that the nerves disappeared and everything else just fell away and the moment truly became just about us.
What advice would you give another bride/groom planning a wedding?
Go with your gut!  Be accepting of others opinions and ideas – sometimes they’ll bring up really good thoughts that you haven’t considered, but if it isn’t what you want – don’t be talked into it.  That goes for the dress down to the smallest detail!  And pick your vendors carefully. If at any time you start getting doubts about a vendor, don’t be afraid to walk away, even if it costs a few bucks to do so.  Better to walk away and get with someone who you are comfortable with and trust than to be stuck with someone who, in the end, doesn’t deliver what you want – including how they interact with you/your wedding party.
Did you do an engagement session or a bridal portrait session? Would you recommend it to another bride/groom?
We did an engagement session – and yes, I would absolutely recommend it.  Other than a phone call and looking at Ellen’s website, we had never met or worked together.  Having the engagement session gave me a huge level of comfort with her, and I knew that we would work really well together on the day of the wedding – which we did!
What do you wish you had done differently on your wedding day?
I wish I had built in more time to spend with my bridal party.  We were all so busy with hair and make-up and such that we didn’t really get a chance to just sit around and enjoy being together as a group before the craziness of the day unfolded.
Name one of your favorite images from your wedding day and tell why it is your favorite.
It was raining after the ceremony, so outside shots weren’t in the cards for us. But, our location had a portico so Ellen set up her stuff underneath it and was able to take some beautiful, unique shots of us outside. I love all those pictures, but my favorite one is of my husband kissing my neck. That picture is not only a beautiful shot, but it is truly us being who we naturally are – goofy and silly and fun.
Is there anything you’d like to share with readers about your wedding day?
Hopefully, you only get married once.  So think about that one thing you always wanted to do for your wedding since you were little, and do it!  I had always wanted a bagpiper to play the processional/recessional music for the ceremony.  The extra money I spent for it was absolutely worth every cent and it made my “dreams come true!”

Wilmington Riverfront Bride and Groom first lookRob and Amber were married on the beautiful outdoor patio of the River Room, overlooking the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, NC.  Knot Too Shabby Events did an amazing job of decorating the wedding, which reflected the relaxed and playful couple.  Rob and Amber added personal items like a Batman garter and cuff links and Converse sneakers that said “Mr. Tew” and “Mrs. Tew” on the back.  Amber’s mother even hand painted little canvases with sunflowers for the guests’ favors.

Amber and Rob got married at The River Room in Wilmington, North Carolina which is a great venue for a smaller, rustic wedding.  It had amazing views of the Cape Fear River and an outdoor patio area for the ceremony site.  The wedding was full of sunflowers and quirky details that fit their fun-loving personalities. Their colors were navy and grey which looked beautiful with the yellow of the sunflowers.  I had always said I would get married in Sambas, but I chickened out.  However, Rob and Amber had personalized Converse sneakers with “Mr. Tew” and “Mrs. Tew” sewn on the back.

Chelsea and AJ got married under a tent at the Crystal Coast Country Club in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina (due to the rain). Judy Hailey, their wedding coordinator, did an amazing job of quickly adjusting and procuring a hard to find tent.  They had a nautical theme that went perfectly with their location which overlooked Bogue Sound.  Their navy and coral colors tied in with the nautical theme.  Don’t worry, though, because the rain couldn’t stop this wedding party.  Sometimes I think the rain makes everyone even more determined to have fun, because it seems to always precede the best receptions.

Be sure to read how the rain made Chelsea feel on her wedding day and how she dealt with it below.

What was your favorite part of the wedding day?

Having all of my favorite people in one place!!  Everyone had told me to embrace the fact that we would have both sides of our friends and family all in one place, and they were completely right!  I wish we could go back and do it all over again!

What surprised you about your wedding day?

The terrible weather and the way everyone made the most of it!  We ended up getting some absolutely stunning photographs at our rehearsal dinner & at our wedding that we couldn’t have gotten without the rain.

What advice would you give another bride/groom planning a wedding?

Don’t sweat the small stuff!  The week of our wedding, I was so upset about our weather.  (We had horrible rain and wind for the entire weekend, and we had selected our venue because of the beautiful waterfront scenery. Many of my husband’s family had never been to the beach/ North Carolina before!)  Thanks to my laid back husband, I decided to stop worrying and think of our terrible weather as a funny joke that would “only happen to us.”  As a result, I had a complete BLAST and could not have been less stressed on the day of the wedding.  Moral of the story: relinquish things that are out of your control and just have the BEST time!  You will enjoy it so much more & those who have to be around you will be very grateful. 😉

Did you do an engagement session or a bridal portrait session? Would you recommend it to another bride/groom?

No and I really wish that I had!  My wedding dress came in the day before our rehearsal, so I did not have time to get the bridal portraits with my horse that I had hoped for.  Ellen does such unbelievable work that I really regret not doing more sessions beforehand.

What do you wish you had done differently on your wedding day?

The only thing I would change is the weather (over which I had no control!), so nothing!

Name one of your favorite images from your wedding day and tell why it is your favorite.
There is a series of photos in which Ellen had our bridal party lift up my husband and I for a kiss.  My so called friends 😉 inadvertently dropped me on my head. Everyone’s reactions are so funny, and it was such a hilarious moment.  The subsequent pictures are so great, because everyone had just been laughing so hard and were so genuinely happy.  We even used one of these pictures as our Christmas card this year. 🙂

Lauren and Andrew’s wedding had the most personal, clever details, but what would you expect from two self proclaimed science and math geeks who met at a game store?  From the moment I arrived, the groomsmen were playing a board game while taking shots.  Lauren’s mother designed and made a creative game-themed wedding cake with playing pieces.  The guests were given personalized playing cards as their gift.  They had everyone leave messages on Jenga pieces, and the couple was announced to the theme song from Game of Thrones!  Get the picture?  If not, here are some to help:

What was your favorite part of the wedding day?
“After actually getting to marry my best friend? Probably getting to visit with friends and family who I don’t get to see often.”

What surprised you about your wedding day?
“Even though everyone says something major will go wrong, nothing actually did.”

What advice would you give another bride/groom planning a wedding?
“Don’t stress about things too much, especially when you can’t control them. I stressed out about things that didn’t really matter in the end.”

Did you do an engagement session or a bridal portrait session? Would you recommend it to another bride/groom?
“We did an engagement session and a bridal portrait session. I would certainly recommend both! The engagement session gave us a chance to get some photos of us together and the bridal portraits gave me a chance to practice hair, makeup and see how it all comes together before the day of the wedding. It also creates a relationship between the couple and photographer which makes the photos on the wedding day even more enjoyable.”

Name one of your favorite images from your wedding day and tell why it is your favorite.
“There are so many to choose from! There is a photo of my husband and I looking at each other with bubbles surrounding us. The look we have and the composition make it one of my favorites. It captures us as a couple so well!”

Is there anything you’d like to share with readers about your wedding day?
“I’m so glad we took the time to reflect on the day after it was over. We were able to write down all the things we remembered that might not have been captured in photos and made for a great keepsake.”

More detail from Lauren:

“The initial thought was to have a classy/traditional style wedding, but to include things that related to us and our relationship.  Well we met at a game store in Raleigh (called Game Theory), where we continued to play every week. We also attended regular parties where some played games (usually us!) and some talked.  Andrew was still fairly new when it came to strategy games, but his collection of board games just seemed to grow as did our relationship.  With as much time we spent playing games and it being home we met, it made since to try and incorporate that into the wedding.  However, I didn’t really want the venue and wedding party to be decked out in what some might call and elaborate theme.  So we figured have the cake decorate would be an easy way to incorporate the games while still having the rest of the decorations be more traditional.
Thus began the cake planning with my mom!  We ended up spending hours deciding which games should be included and how they could all fit together on each layer of the cake.  The final product featured heavy strategy (Euro) board game boards/pieces on the bottom, party/lightweight games in the middle and a bride dragging a groom away from a PlayStation as the cake topper.  However, since this left the sided and plate that the cake sat on relatively bare, we have to do a bit more problem solving.  The solution included adding some additional game pieces to the sides, a set of game train to represent where we came from and how we ended up together, painted game dice holding up each cake layer and finally life-sized animal games pieces from one our our favorite games. The resulting structure was certainly a work of art that represented our favorites which are very diverse.
However, having just the cake didn’t seem to be enough, so we decided to add other gaming/puzzle elements into the rest of the wedding including dice and game pieces on each table and a wedding word search on the programs.  We even encouraged and welcomed some our guests bringing games to the reception to play after dinner (which they did!).
We still play games and now have a house of our own where we can actually host board game nights, which we plan on doing regularly.  It is wonderful to have something to do together which challenges us individually and as a couple be such a big part of our lives.  I’m just thankful we were able to incorporate it into our engagement shoot (which you made so much fun!) and into the wedding.  It truly made it unique!”
